Letter 31 — Campt near petersburg VA, December the 13, 1864
“I onley have 8 month more to surve and then I dont care where they get there Solgers”
Dear Mother I take my pen in hand to let you kno that we are all well at present and hope when these few lines comes to hand they may find you as they leave me that is in joying good health we are back in the armey of the Potomic a gane we left the valey last saturday a week and got to Washing a Sounday morning and there we got on the transports and we started at won oclock for cittey point and we landed there a monday night and a tusday we got on the cars and went don on the weldon wrailrod south of petursburg we releaved the 5 corps and they went a round to tear up some more of the rebels wrail rod they ar gest a geting back and I expect we will have to moove out of there camp thete is a wralrod runing from cittey point cleare a long the lines it is a bout 30 miles long there has not bin much fighting hear since we com there has not bin eny picket firen in front of our corps all tho four pickets can see the rebel pickets very plane but they have made a bargen not to schoot at each uther unless won or th uther goss to ad vance but in front of the 9 corps they ar a chooting at won or nother all the time we can hear cannading nearley all the time in front of petersburg well I wraght to you in my other letter that I expected to get home this winter but as we have got don hear a gane I dont no whether I will get to com now or not when we get setteld don a gane I think that ther will be a chance to get a furlow som thinks that we wont stay hear long there is som talk of no a going back to Winchester a gane I onely hope that we will git to go back there and stay the rest of our time there I onely have 8 month more to surve and then I dont care where they get there Solgers well I must close for this time so no more at present bu remane yours un till death
