Letter 5 — April 30, 1865
“I was the best speller at our school last winter, I got the premium for spelling”
I take my pen in hand to let you know that I am well at present and hope that when these few lins reach you they will find you all the same. I have been to church today. It is raining here today. Aunt Eliza's folks are all well. I was the best speller at our school last winter, I got the premium for spelling and in the geography class. Our Sunday School has not commenced yet. Mrs Showers is dead, she was buried in the cemetery. Mary Craig is teaching school at our school house. I am not going to school this summer, I went to school last winter fifty five days and missed five days. I would like to see you so well if I could. I want you to come up as soon as you can. Well I must bring my letter to a close for this time. Sp good bye, write soon.
