Letter 58 — January 21, 1877
“Nan thought I was going to die soon, so she asked me for my baby, she shall never have her while I am here”
I seat myself to answer you letter and to let you know how we are. Ellie has had a sore throat and the baby has a sore neck from being so fat I guess. Elva and myself are well. We are having plenty of sleighing this winter and it is very icy now. We was over at Aunt Eliza's sleighing three weeks ago today, they were all well. Jim and Mary was here Thursday. We received the mittens and are much obliged, you could not fit them any better if you had them there. We was up at Baker's to a turkey roast. Lide Wallace and her man was there, they have a bad tale on Lide's man, there was a widow woman had a baby by him about the time him and Lide was married, they say they can hear the baby cry from where they live. Well I guess I will let Ellie finish, so good by. Write soon.
*From Ellie in same letter:*
Well I must tell you the baby's name, We call her Cora Elizabeth. She is 7 months old the 30th of this month. If you knew how sweet our girls is, you would come up. Cora is as fat as she can be and Elva is talking. Nan thought I was going to die soon, so she asked me for my baby, she shall never have her while I am here.
