Letter 42 — July 24, 1873
“Laura poured the ink bottle full of water, she said she wanted to make more ink.”
I seat myself to let you know that I am well at present hoping when these few lines reach you that they will find you the same. I would have wrote sooner but have had no chance, we have been so busy harvesting and threshing. We have had some very warm weather here. The measles are about gone. Lide Wallace and Ellie have both had them, since I wrote. I guess I will escape them this time. The cholera has made its appearance in Springfield, there has been some deaths, only one that I knowed. Lizzie Wren was buried yesterday, I heard that she was to have been married next week. I do not know how Nan will make it with her affairs, there has been nothing done yet, they don't know when they will have their sale. She is going home after the sale. Grandpap's boy has gone home, they could not get along. Next Sunday week is Camp Meeting, I do not know whether I will go or not. I saw in the newspaper that if you was not there before half past six o'clock Sunday morning you could not get in, I don't know how it is. Well it is getting about bedtime, I must bring my letter to a close for this time. Ellie sends her love to you. So good bye. Write soon and don't wait so long as I have.
P. S. Excuse my lead pencil, Laura poured the ink bottle full of water, she said she wanted to make more ink.
